Misty Fjords National Monument
Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

We chose Island Wings Air Service based on reviews and we are so glad we did. Michelle was friendly, amazing, engaging and provided us with the tour of a lifetime. Luck for us, we managed to arrive on one of the 12 super sunny days they have each year, which you can see in my photos. We were picked up at the dock by a friendly and energetic man for a short bus ride the the dock where the planes are kept. We were met by Michelle and her partner and were given a quick safety briefing by on of her dock hands. We were loaded into the plane and off we went. Michelle was very informative and spent a lot of time showing us sights. We were able to land at a lake, we all got out and listened to the sound of silence. Pretty amazing stuff. At one point she did ask us if everyone was "OK". You do wear headphones with microphones in them. I think she's use to more passengers talking. Our group didn't say a word. Mostly because we were speechless with the beauty. The only recommendation I have is if you think you are interested in this...book as soon as possible. They do sell out and fast. Island Wings is by far the best tour company out there. Not only that, you get your picture with Lady Esther. Plane enthusiast or not...her plane is a sight to behold!

Dear Kevin, Thank you for the glowing review! I always ask if folks are ok when they are quiet just to make sure they are feeling well... not air sick or scared. Most of the time people are quiet because the majesty of the fjords can leave one speechless, even the normally chatty ones! Just like to be sure! Hope you had wonderful experiences throughout your trip to Alaska. Happy trails, Michelle

We recently visited Ketchikan on an Alaskan cruise, I had done my homework on Tripadvisor and booked a flight for us and two friends with Michelle on the Misty Fjords Tour. To start, prior to our trip we heard about the shocking fatalities on a similar flight but we were adamant that we would continue with our plans and oh what a great decision that was. Shona picked us up at the port and the transfer to the plane was very easy, the plane was small and whilst we might have been slightly hesitant at the start once we were in the sky we all knew this was worth every penny. Michelle is a fantastic pilot who you immediately feel at ease with, she has been flying for around 40 years and I never at any time felt uncomfortable, in fact on our return r=trip I got to sit in the co-pilot seat! The views are stunning, the weather helped as it was mainly clear and we even had time to land as we thought we had seen a bear, unfortunately this wasn't the case. Michelle spent time taking pictures of us with the plane and she was delightful to talk to about the area which she knows so much about. Thanks to Island Wings for a truly unforgettable experience of Alaska, this was certainly the highlight of our cruise holiday. Folks seriously, you have to do this with this service, they are experienced and well organised and worth the expense. I can only hope that one day I can retun and do it all again.

Dear Batch 65, Thank you so much for this wonderful review! Thank you also for having faith in me and my flying abilities. After recent events, many people are fearful. But just as automobiles do not get into trouble by themselves, neither do airplanes. I have enjoyed 42 years of safe flying, most of them here in Ketchikan. My goal is to be a very old lady pilot! The current oldest lady pilot in the Guiness Book of World Records is 96. Maybe I can beat her record one day!?!? I will do my best to find you a bear next time, or better yet come back during bear season (July through September) and I'll take you on our Bear Viewing tour. So happy to hear you enjoyed your trip with us and that we are a part of your Alaskan memories! Hope you had memorable experiences throughout your entire trip to Alaska! Thanks again! Blue Skies & Tailwinds, Michelle

Michelle is the owner and pilot of Island Wings...we couldn't have had a better pilot for this trip. She was great at pointing wildlife out to us and even circling when she spotted whales bubble feeding. She was as excited for us to be able to see this as we were! I would highly recommend Island Wings!
