We booked this tour mainly in the hopes of seeing the Northern Lights but knew there was the possibility of not seeing them. We were picked up as planned and headed to Chena Resort. First activity - ice museum. There were a lot of people on the tour. There were too many to fit in the entry to put on parkas so a group of us were told to wait outside. By the time we got in it was 5:10 (tour was 5 pm). We couldn’t hear much of the explanations since there were a lot of people and others around us were not paying attention and chatting. We were the last to get our appletinis because the guide was at the front letting others out. By the time we got ours she said we had 5 min (5:41pm). We were told we could take them outside so did that. Never really got to enjoy the bar area because by the time we able to get to it the tour was over. Next activity- Hot Springs- locker area has a lot to be desired. No hooks in where the showers are so no place to hang your bathing suit while showering. Hot springs themselves were nice and relaxing. We had planned on dinner next and had been told they didn’t take reservations but should be fine to walk up and get a table. It was 7:30 and was told it was 1 1/2 hr wait. We should have expected this since it’s the only restaurant there. We knew we didn’t have time because the northern lights portion was at 9:30pm, so we headed to the activity center to sit and wait. They did have some cold items to purchase and we found individual frozen pizzas to microwave for dinner. While waiting we were really concerned about seeing the lights since it was raining. One of the employees was talking to another and we overheard him saying he had just been up and it was cloudy and rainy so it didn’t look good. Also 2 different guests had gone in to ask and were basically told not to sign up even though there was room because the lights were basically not going to be seen. I asked if they cancelled ever (again it was a steady rain/showers) and he said no or do they ever leave early and he said we would stay until 1:50 am. At 9:30 pm we loaded into the snow cats and were told the ride would be bumpy. We were thrown around the entire ride up. My husband has had neck surgery and there was no warning before about the ride (like not recommended for pregnant women or those with back and neck issues). One good thing is we were inside a yurt at the top. No one went outside - still raining. They did have games so we took a deck of cards to play. They did have noodles and oatmeal if anyone wanted it. The employees all sat and were on their phones unless someone approached to get something. They didn’t seem interested in being there. Finally at 1:50 am we headed back down. Thrown around even more or felt like. Probably had to wait 10-15 min for the shuttle to take those from Fairbanks back. I heard others complain and say they were told the shuttle would be waiting and ready for us. Needless to say the best part was the ride back. The van was really nice and comfortable and I slept the entire ride. I would not recommend this activity. Either drive outside the city and see on your own and you can watch the weather and KP index to see if it might be a good night. I feel we should have been told it was highly unlikely they would be seen and given the option to reschedule or they should have cancelled- even for a partial refund. We aren’t from the area and knew it was a miserable night with no possibility of seeing the northern lights.

Nice location, tour group and Suzi did an awesome job coordinating it for a flawless experience. It was nice to be able to arrive get a brief introduction and be shown around, then go right into the ice museum and then have a well-timed dinner reservation. The restaurant was good and the food was top quality. They had a nice menu selection. Then there was about an hour and a half to enjoy the Hot Springs Before hiking up the hill to the Auroreum to see the aurora borealis. Suzi helped us find them even though they were dim early in the evening. We stopped at another location on the way back when we saw the aurora flaring from the van. Had an incredible experience and some phenomenal pictures.
