We certainly dropped on lucky with a transiting pod of about 25 Orca's close to the Northern Coast of Orca's Island. Our first Whale Watching trip and I can't see how we could ever top this trip. What really made it though was the knowledge and informative guide from the crew, both were so knowledgeable. I was surprised how much they communicate with the other Whale Watching companies but I suppose they all need to survive by sharing info so despite the fact there were about 7 or 8 boats close together (we were the first to arrive) by the time we left they were all keeping a good distance apart and respecting each others space. We had so much time to spare as the pod was so close to shore that after an hour with the Whales we were taken on a nature tour of the outlying area to see Seals, Sea Lions & Bald Eagles which just topped off the trip. No sign of any Porpoises but given the size of the Orca Pod I guess they were keeping well away!! I really didn't know what to expect before going on the trip but have memories for life, the sight of Orca's breaching within a hundered metres of so of the boat and the smell is something i'll never forget.

I'm now a repeat customer to Outer Island Expeditions. This summer we went on a whale watching tour and a kayaking tour with them. Last summer we went just on the whale watching tour. Each time the tour guides are crazy over qualified for this - and as a traveler, you win here. Our guides Dr. Cat and Capt. Dylan were AMAZING. Dr. Cat told us about the geologic movement bringing in T-Rex fossils, along with loads of interesting marine life facts. Capt. Dylan was able to get us to a pod of seven transient orcas. One even swam RIGHT in front of the boat. We also saw harbor porpoises, seals, and a HUMPBACK whale. You can bring a camera, but really its better to experience the view without your face behind your phone. But if you must, per Dr. Cat's suggestion, just record and screenshot later on from the video, that worked out better than trying to get shots. Bring a windbreaker because their boats are fast. On our kayaking tour, the crew was super flexible with us as they were able to squeeze us in a day before our scheduled time. Michelle was our tour guide and also was super educated and experienced in marine life. The gear was legit. The length of the tour was perfect. In a tandem kayak my husband and I shared the rowing (read, I got freaked out by the vast amount of water so he rowed the entire way back - and he survived). Bring sunscreen and waterproof shoes. They have dry bags available for your stuff. But still, I certainly wouldn't bring my phone along. Some young kiddos might find this challenging, depends on the kid. I absolutely recommend the whale watching and kayaking tours. It's worth it!

Great time! Was on the Orcas in 25 minutes and watched them for quite a while. Our guide was great and educated us on many things connected with the wildlife and San Juan Islands.
