There are three main whale watching outfitters on Orcas Island, all considered to be good. However, by a stroke of luck, OIE was the first to return our phone message and we got on board the same day. OIE has the fastest boats on the sound which meant we could get to where the whales were known to be in the shortest amount of time. The naturalist, Katie, who was on our boat was as cute, puckish and charming as she was knowledgeable about the whales, their behaviors, and their habitat. We were fortunate to have gone out on a day of brilliant sunshine and mild temperatures that made standing on deck totally enjoyable. Not only did we see orcas, some of which passed right under our boat, we saw humpbacks lingering in the Sound beyond the time they are usually there. They were tail lobbing and flipper slapping and seemed to be as happy about the sunshine as we were. We could also hear them trumpeting from time to time, a somewhat rare event. Katie was the main reason we are giving OIE a five star rating; she was so informative, enthusiastic and eager to share her knowledge.

This company offers the best and most informative whale watching experience I have ever had! I have been on whale watching boats before, but this company is fantastic. I have been on several of their boats this summer and both were very enjoyable. One picked us up at tge Lopez Islander resort dock on Lopez. The other was taken from Smuggler cove marina on Orcas island. The staff are courteous and well informed! The boats and the ride was very comfortable. The whales performed brilliantly as always! Thank you!

While getting our Discovery Pass on Orcas Island we mentioned to the ranger we were wanting to go on a whale watching tour. She pulled out a coupon and said these are the folks you need to go see. We are god we did! Captain Paul and Lindsey were fantastic. She was very knowledgeable and worked her way around the large boat to talk to everyone, answer questions and was informative without being over the top. She was so friendly and engaging. Loved her! Captain Paul got us set up ahead and as close to the Orcas as allowed and we saw J and K pods. We even saw Granny, the oldest Orca alive sneak a peak at us as she was leading the J group along! Thanks guys for a great trip!
