WOW!! The Alaska Catch with Captain Mike is one of our ALL-TIME FAVORITE excursion/fishing trips! The fishing was incredible, but equally important, Mike Fleece is an awesome captain! He is very knowledgeable, fun, a great guide! While we were motoring out, the scenery was breathtaking and Mike had some really interesting stories to share. Also, his boat was incredibly clean. We were on a short time frame because of a cruise change and he worked the trip so we could catch lots of halibut and cod, (He does salmon, too, but it was not in season), then had some of our fish for lunch (truly delicious) and the remainder shipped home and we are still enjoying it! If you are in Ketchikan, definitely go fishing with Mike and The Alaska Catch.

Captain Jimmy was the perfect host and got us what we want....10 fish caught (2-5 lbs). Had a party of 5 and all caught fish. Jimmy was very helpful and well informed about the fishing, area and where to eat after we were finished. He ordered up a beautiful day and delivered.

We have many fishing trips around the world and wanted to check off halibut. The captain was pleasant enough and hear was good but we were disappointed in the boat. It was very hard riding considering the sea was not too big. The blurb mention a portable toilet with a privacy curtain.. well a I think a plastic bucket fits that. The fishing seemed very robotic and just going through the motions. Too expensive for what we received

Kruuza, Thank you for choosing The Alaska Catch on your visit to Ketchikan via the Silver Muse Cruise Ship. You booked a 2 person private Halibut fishing charter with us on 7/27. Our guide was on time, with a pleasant attitude, along with quality gear as you mentioned. Your party caught a limit of Halibut and with the rest of your trip time our guide took you salmon fishing, catching both King and Pink salmon. We operate our fishing charters with a 2015 Hewescraft Alaskan 26’ and 2017 Raider Coastal 25’ These are custom built, aluminum, all welded vessels, with an enclosed cabin, powered with Honda 250’s, specifically designed for salmon and halibut fishing in Southeast Alaska. These vessels also allow us the ability to offer experiences that include crabbing, beach combing, forest service cabin drop off and pick ups, and exploring along beaches and rocky shorelines. Not many companies/boats can offer these options, but with our customized vessel, with a stable and seaworthy platform, we can. We do not advertise a flushable toilet. We offer a porta potty with a privacy curtain. For most of our clients this is sufficient. If nature calls and you prefer to hit the beach to handle your business, we’d be happy to take you inside the protection of the rainforest canopy. In my 20 years of working on various boats, I’ve yet to find a flushable toilet with a holding tank onboard that did not contain a noticeable smell or potentially create a significant disaster when a vessel is in rough seas. While designing our vessels I opted to maximize fishing deck space and a comfortable seating area by limiting the size of a bathroom. Halibut fishing is generally pursued in one of two ways. The first is anchoring over structure and vertical jigging off the bottom. The second is back trolling and drifting over an area while vertical jigging. Either way we use various artificial presentations with bait. The bait establishes a scent trail and our glowing lure gives off a visual. Generally, halibut will smell the bait, follow the scent trail, see the lure, and hit the bait. I agree with you, when the halibut are as active as they were on this day, it can feel like going through the motions as you mentioned; when the fish are jumping on the bait a fisherman doesn't get to fully enjoy the sense of anticipation that pulls us out onto the water every day. You booked directly with our company and without a third party vendor or through your cruise ship. Booking directly with The Alaska Catch saves our cruise clients 30-40% off the cost of fishing excursions sold onboard cruise ships. Many of our 2 person parties learn they can book a private charter with us, for less than the per person price of a shared fishing charter sold onboard. Our pricing allows us to offer a private experience, with more fishing options, at a better rate, along with an experienced guide that carries a personal touch and great attitude.
