I never got around to learning to surf at home in Australia, so thought I'd start tackling it here in Maui at the age of 37. Check in was simple and staff were helpful. I had enough time to apply reef-safe sunscreen, wander into the shop next door and they asked who I had as an instructor. Even though I wasn't too worried, they were very complimentary about my instructor Hayley, which was a good sign. If you can choose an instructor, choose Hayley. She's super cool, gives clear and simple instruction, and is both intuitive and friendly. She took me through the basics and movements on land and safety information, then pretty soon we were right out into the water. My one goal for this lesson was to stand up at least once, with Hayley's help, I stood up multiple times and learned so much. I think she was more excited for me than I was, each time I stood up and turned around, you could tell my instructor - both fists in the air and hollering! Absolutely made the experience. Always positive, helpful in correcting my form and helping me understand why things happened the way they did. The photographer was also very helpful with some gems of advice. I didn't even realise they had photography - available for purchase on disc or via cloud drop(?). They additionally gave me a MWR hat at the end (of my choice of colour), which was a nice surprise. May have just been a special for the day though. I was super tired afterwards and have a brand new respect for the fitness level and endurance of surfers. Highly recommend if you've EVER thought of surfing, definitely choose this place.
