After 2 activities cancelled during our Alaskan vacation, this was our last big planned adventure and it did not disappoint in any way. Our guides warned that the water was much warmer than normal and the wildlife seen so far this season was clearly impacted by the temps in a negative way.
Still we saw various birds, Steller sea lions, jellyfish, Dall's porpoises, puffins, and harbor seals. The unexpected and stunning highlight was a prolonged display by a humpback whale, lasting easily 20 minutes or more. Our guides and NPS host were nearly speechless themselves, a sure sign that we were witnessing something truly memorable (as if we couldn't figure it out soon our own!).
As part of this particular tour, we also had an all-you-can-eat lunch on Fox Island featuring salmon and prime rib. With our discount for reserving in advance online, our tickets were under $100 each, easily one of the best values for our money on our entire trip.
While most trips probably won't get to experience what we did, it was altogether a worthwhile excursion, both in terms of time and money well spent. We felt the 5 hour trip was long enough without being too lengthy. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable. We would highly recommend taking a tour with Kenai Fjords.
