We went on an afternoon trip in August 2015. Checking in was easy, and by taking the trip on Monday, we went half price because my husband is in the British Army. Hurrah for military discounts! The boat was nice and spacious. Erin was our guide. Kirsten was the captain and Dave and Jessie were crew members. They have a cash-only galley on board that sold snacks and drinks plus seasickness tablets. We were fine but one lady on our trip was very poorly indeed (but well looked after by Dave!). As we sailed out of the harbour, we saw lots of sea lions. We then motored on out to sea. We didn't see any whales on our trip, but we did see a pod of about 200 dolphins who swam alongside the boat for ages allowing us to get photos and videos. It was truly wonderful to see them in the wild, not just swimming round a small tank at Sea World or similar. We also saw 4 hammerhead sharks and an elephant seal on our trip. As we didn't see any whales, they gave us 50% vouchers for a second trip, but we were happy with the sea lions and dolphins!

Beautiful day on the gorgeous Pacific. We saw one blue whale a ways and way and very far south. We didn't spend much time waiting for him/her and that was disappointing. I actually spotted a Minke whale which we got to see a bit better. Fun to watch. We had an unconfirmed hump back just briefly and a few common dolphins. Not as much wild life as I hoped.

We had a fantastic time on our whale watching tour! The waves do get a bit rocky, even for those who don't normally get seasick. There was a lot of space on the boat (although at times when everyone would rush to one section, it was hard to get a glimpse of the whales). The guide provided a lot of great narration, and kept everyone aware of when potential sightings might happen (and didn't over talk). And in the meantime, they played upbeat music, giving a fun vibe to the whole tour. We saw a hammerhead shark, a few seals, and a couple whales (including what was possibly a mother and baby whale). We were hoping to see more, but the trip was still great. One thing that did put a damper on our day was that we had bought a Groupon for the trip for 10 people. In the fine print, it didn't say anything about children under 2 not being allowed on board. The main reason we were going out was to celebrate my sister and her husband's anniversary, and they had their 1 year old with them. Unfortunately on the day of the trip, we found out that he couldn't come at all, and her husband had to stay on land with him. SD Whale Watch was apologetic about the misunderstanding so that helped. It was just something we wish could've been avoided. A fun tour that's a great way to spend a few hours!
