We went out on the afternoon whale watch and saw some blue whales from a distance (the spouts, the backs, and the tell-tale turquoise blue shade in the water, and a bit of a tail fluke) and a TON of dolphins - they were the best part! The guide was OK, but didn't really impart any new knowledge (but then again our family is completely Ranger Rick, so it may have been new info to others on the tour). For the price of the ticket it's worth the trip, and for some reason (maybe because we didn't get closer to the whales?) we were given a voucher for 1/2 off a future trip. (If you'd like to be closer to the whales and dolphins we'd recommend going with Offshore Blue Adventures - smaller, faster boats that get you to the sightings quicker and enable you to see more, but the ticket prices are more expensive.) Also, there's a little cafe at the San Diego Whale Watch dock center so you can grab a bite to eat before/after you go...
