OK, the naturalist on board told us not to tell, because our whale watching trip was unusual, but I'm going to. The tour was so popular today that they split up the group and sent us out on 2 boats. We started out on a foggy January morning, and tooled along for the first hour of the 3-hour trip, seeing only a couple of dolphins and some seals. Then we were swarmed by a pod of at least a hundred dolphins, and left them when our sister boat, about a quarter mile away from us spotted three gray whales. The 3 were joined by a another group, then another, and then more. We saw 16 whales in total including what is evidently a very rare sighting of a mother and newborn calf. Extremely good tour, and the captain, naturalist and crew were wonderful. Highly recommended.
