Bonaventure Cemetery

During this 2.5 hour tour, you will be joining a very exclusive club of people who have seen the cemetery after it closes to the public. Not since it opened in 1846 has this been an opportunity, but thanks to your very special local host, now it is. You are literally locked in the cemetery the entire time; for the right taker, there's no price you can put on the joy of that. Imagine having the serenity, stillness, and quiet of the cemetery, uninterrupted by the living world. Cimetière Bonaventure

Au cours de cette visite de 2,5 heures, vous rejoindrez un club très exclusif de personnes qui ont vu le cimetière après sa fermeture au public. Ce n'était pas une opportunité depuis son ouverture en 1846, mais grâce à votre hôte local très spécial, c'est maintenant le cas. Vous êtes littéralement enfermé dans le cimetière tout le temps ; pour le bon preneur, il n'y a pas de prix que vous pouvez mettre sur la joie de cela. Imaginez avoir la sérénité, l'immobilité et la tranquillité du cimetière, ininterrompu par le monde vivant. Les histoires s'étendent de nos jours jusqu'aux débuts de la plantation de Bonaventure en 1754. Nos sujets vont du drôle et édifiant au macabre dans sa forme la plus morbide. Be aware that this walking tour goes on rain or shine. We were in the midst of a torrential rain storm with thunder and lightning when we were to leave for this tour. I texted Shannon, the guide, and got a text they were evaluating. By the time I received another text saying we would go out at 5:30 I knew we would be late. We caught up with the group, but we were trailing throughout the walk. By the time we got to each stop we had missed some of the presentation. The stories were interesting and the terrain was not too difficult even though it rained for at least the first half hour. BUT at the end, the group followed Shannon at a pace we couldn't keep up with. There were no stops along the way to "catch up". One of our group of 3 was ahead of us and as long as we could see her we were ok but at a bend in the path we lost sight of her. When we finally arrived at the end of the walk, I asked how far we had walked back and was told I 1/4 miles. One of our group had a painful back which was why she couldn't walk fast. My advice is, if you are older or unable to walk fast, DO NOT take this tour.

Definitely worth taking! I would image this tour would be awesome during the fall-winter months as it would be dark during the tour! May time it was still light but that did not diminish the experience. Shannon Scott has quite the personality and had some amazing stories and secrets to share about the cemetery! All factual! Take this tour! Shows you lots of amazing pictures too!

The after hours tour of Bonaventure with Scott seemed like 15 minutes rather than 2 1/2 hours. Scott is a historian who knows the history of the city, the cemetery and the fascinating inhabitants of Savannah from inception to today. Although he certainly covers the famous people buried in Bonaventure, he also covers the history of people who were well known in Savannah but not necessarily beyond. The songwriter, Johnny Mercer and Billy Hansford, the villain/victim in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil are included as well as stories about the man who fell 70 feet as a child and landed on his head and later killed his own best friend as a result of the injury. This is NOT a ghost tour or voodoo excursion-it is a real trip through the history of a fascinating city populated by fascinating characters and told by a historian, poet, accomplished artist and true storyteller. It is worth every cent of the price. Bring comfortable walking shoes because the surfaces are uneven. At least in May the weather was fine and no coat or windbreaker was needed. In fact it was rather warm and shorts and sleeveless tops were the best dress. Definitely bring a camera because the statuary in the cemetery and the view from the bluff overlooking the river are real photo ops.
