Bonaventure Cemetery

During this 2.5 hour tour, you will be joining a very exclusive club of people who have seen the cemetery after it closes to the public. Not since it opened in 1846 has this been an opportunity, but thanks to your very special local host, now it is. You are literally locked in the cemetery the entire time; for the right taker, there's no price you can put on the joy of that. Imagine having the serenity, stillness, and quiet of the cemetery, uninterrupted by the living world. Stories stretch from the present day all the way back to Bonaventure's plantation beginnings in 1754. Our topics range from the funny and uplifting to the macabre at its most morbid. This tour was not what I expected. I hoped for something lighthearted with entertaining, thrilling, suspense-filled stories to keep me on my toes throughout the tour. I wish the tour had something upping the fright factor. Instead, I was met with what felt like an educational seminar by what felt like a university professor who was passionate about his topic but delivered in a lecture format. The enthusiasm was kinda present, but it was still too dull for me. It wasn't all that fun, and I couldn't wait for the whole thing to end. Way too historical. I love history, but I wasn't looking for a historical experience. This tour was not frightening one bit. I think it is misslabeled as a "ghost tour". However, this is perfect for you if you want an educational experience regarding Bonaventure Cemetery! It is riddled with Freemason stories and other narratives. Also, if you haven't read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," you will feel lost on this tour. In my opinion, it's not worth the price as the advertising is somewhat misleading.

Thanks so much for your candid opinion on your personal take of the experience. I'm complimented more than feeling criticized actually and I thank you on that note! I honestly don't expect everyone to resonate with my style albeit take some umbrage with your statement about passion but fair enough. I don't get too caught up in trying to generate illusion or sell you on an emotion that in my view, isn't there or doesn't in my view, seem commensurate to the actual events as I've known or experienced them. I leave that type of story peddling to the other tours downtown. I find that people overall come to me for the straight record vs. the invented or fantasy and that's what I've delivered now for 15 years. As an aside, the topic of Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil is in the advertising and do what I can to bring the newbies up to speed with some relative understanding that not everyone is familiar. Perhaps once you read the novel or see the movie, you'll reflect back more favorably on what you saw or heard. As to the pricing "worthiness," comment? As mentioned at the beginning of the tour, a significant portion goes back to cemetery preservation efforts and would like to add, is the only tour of its type doing anything of that nature. Furthermore, at the risk of sounding a smidgen selfish, I do hope you or someone in your life, enjoys the signed poster art which came with the tour. It's my personal, passionate touch to the event and isn't exactly cheap to produce and in my view, very much adds more "worth" to the ticket price. And nothing about me doing the sea hag story walking backwards? Hah! Tough customer folks but we appreciate them!

I am pretty sure I have undiagnosed ADHD, and I usually have a had time being 100% present during tours. However, this tour kept my attention the entire time. Shannon’s amazing storytelling had me hooked. It was hands down the best tour I have ever been on. He really knows how to connect with his tour groups and represent the history of Savannah. He is making the ancestors proud. If you’re headed to town, do yourself a favor... watch Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and then book this tour.
