Telluride Rafting on the San Miguel River: Full-Day Rafting

Aperçu
When it comes to Colorado whitewater, hardly anyone knows about the San Miguel River. Which is kind of a surprise! Given how much fun it is, on top of being in proximity to bougie and beloved Telluride.

The rafting section is gorgeously scenic, exciting for all experience levels, and pretty much a must if you want to spend the afternoon like a local. Its red sandstone canyon juxtaposed by flourishing pine forests make for a picturesque setting to recreate on this Rocky Mountain river.

Anyone who loves the outdoors will have an absolute hoot on this tour, whether it’s your first or hundredth time rafting. Just ask our guides, most— if not all!— will agree that the San Miguel is their favorite river to run.

We chose the 1/2 day of rafting on the Lower Animas. Our group ranged in age from 16 and 18 year old boys who wanted lots of rapids and adventure to 73 and 80 year old grandparents who just wanted a nice rafting ride down the river. No one was disappointed and everyone in the group had a blast! Our guide was Ben and he did an awesome job. When we were loading in the raft, he made suggestions as to where we each should sit based on our ages and the level of excitement we wanted, placing my in-laws in the back of the raft close to him so that they were able to have a smoother, drier ride and not have to paddle as much if they didn't want to . He was very knowledgeable about the river, history of Durango, and the things to do in the area. Ben asked what we had done while we were there, what we had planned, and even suggested some things that we might enjoy. He also recommended restaurants and each one that we tried was delicious! Even though the water levels had dropped causing there not to be as many rapids as there had been, he made sure to steer toward any areas of the river that would provide the most adventure for my teenage sons. The guides also provided a snack of fruit, beverages, and granola bars when we took a break and were all very personable, checking with each group to make sure that everyone was having a good time. At the end of our trip, we were able to purchase a CD containing 10 or so amazing photos of us on the river during our trip as well as photos of places in Durango. We could have not been more pleased with our trip and Ben, our guide! Our only regret is that it was a 1/2 day and not a whole day! If we return to Durango, we will definitely use Mild2Wild and consider booking a whole day trip! I HIGHLY recommend this trip and company. Also, be sure to ask for Ben!
