Telluride Rafting on the San Miguel River: Full-Day Rafting

Aperçu
When it comes to Colorado whitewater, hardly anyone knows about the San Miguel River. Which is kind of a surprise! Given how much fun it is, on top of being in proximity to bougie and beloved Telluride.

The rafting section is gorgeously scenic, exciting for all experience levels, and pretty much a must if you want to spend the afternoon like a local. Its red sandstone canyon juxtaposed by flourishing pine forests make for a picturesque setting to recreate on this Rocky Mountain river.

Anyone who loves the outdoors will have an absolute hoot on this tour, whether it’s your first or hundredth time rafting. Just ask our guides, most— if not all!— will agree that the San Miguel is their favorite river to run.

My family and I had the best time on this trip! We took a 2 day trip. The guides were all extremely helpful, entertaining, and knowledgeable of all aspects of the trip from safety on the river to cooking delicious meals over the fire! Not only were the guides awesome, the office staff who helped me book were also extremely helpful and kind. I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for a beautiful, wilderness rafting trip with fantastic camping and excellent customer service.

OK, so we have done the Animas a couple times and with the high water levels they are dropping in after Smelter Rapids. So we were looking for a different adventure. WE FOUND IT!!! The upper Piedra was so much fun. Wasn’t scary, was EXILERATING!!! To start the day you meet at the Piedra River “ Store”. Easy to find, right on 160. Then you hop on a bus ride into Pagosa Springs and then north. Jesse brought fresh-made donuts. The road is a little bumpy but it is worth it. The vistas are magnificent, beautiful mountains, lakes, meadows, and an occasional deer. The drop in spot is a beautiful campground with a meadow on one side and a cliff across the river. The river was really moving fast. The rapids build as you get further down river. Lunch was terrific. The stopping spot was a beautiful meadow with wild primrose, grasses, trees, logs to sit on. The guys set up a table with delicious turkey, cheeses, fresh salad with tomatoes, peppers, onions on the side. So you could make a sandwich or have a salad, or both!! Then back on the river. The tall limestone and granite cliffs were full of columbines, flowering sedum and cascading wildflowers all along the river bed. We wished we had our camera with us just to get photos of the flowers. The butterflies were everywhere too. The river itself is stunning. It looks like a tourism photo for Colorado. The two canyons you go through are spectacular with an occasional meadow to break up the side of the river. We were amazed at the beauty of the area. The rapids kept getting bigger with deeper drop offs. Jesse prepared us before each with perfect directions to get through. Again, so much fun!!! Just as it was getting exciting the take up point was upon us. Why didn’t we take the full day trip???? We want to sign up for lower Piedra next time. But, we would also do the upper part again, and again, and again!!!! Everything about the day was just PERFECT!!!! I can’t forget to mention the foot-holds in the bottom of the rafts. Other rafting companies you have to tuck your feet into the side of the raft. These foot pockets are much more convenient and a lot safer. We have to mention (besides Jesse) Miles and John the other two guides. Also with us were Rachel and Emilia from the office. The girls were experiencing the river to become more knowledgeable to help in the customer service. Now they can inform the customer just how wonderful the trip really is!!!

My son (23) and I (72) rafted the upper Animas last spring (2013). We're coming back for the Piedre this spring. The upper Animas was 2 days and 26 miles of constant whitewater excitement. When we had time to look up every turn of the river seemed to be another picture of snow-covered peaks centrally framed by steep canyon walls. I've taken 24 river trips, US and abroad, this was both the most exciting and most scenic two days of them all. And then we had an outstanding evening, more steak and salad than we could consume, truly enjoyed the guides and their outside interests (a young distance runner, other rivers to run, restaurants in Durango), and an interesting side trip briefly into the Weminuche where we saw someone's poorly made cache previously subject to damage by a bear. Later in the summer, as I took a different trip with a different outfitter, our guide talked about the river skills of his best friend--and that best friend turned out to be our guide with Mild2Wild.
