My wife and I decided on the three-day New York Pass after looking over which attractions we might be interested in. Some of the attractions were no problem at all (MoMA, for example), and others were only a little problematic (Top of the Rock, for example). The major problems that came up were on the most popular attractions. We tried to do the Statue of Liberty tour. The wait time was three hours for people who walked up with cash to buy tickets. However, if you had the New York Pass, you had to wait in a different line for an hour and a half to get a ticket, just so you could go wait in the same three hour line that people who had cash tickets waited in. The same was true at the 9/11 museum - if you had a New York Pass, it took you longer than it took people who had cash (or who had the competing CityPass), because you had to stand in one line to convert the bar code on your phone to a paper ticket before you could go stand in the admission line. Meanwhile, there were line-less kiosks where you could buy a ticket in cash, and step right into the admission line.
We were not in New York City for long enough to justify spending half a day in line for each popular attraction, so we missed out on a few attractions. I suppose I must admit that long lines were mostly to blame, but having the New York Pass actually made those lines even longer.
We did manage to get our money out of the pass, but only by visiting attractions we would probably not have otherwise visited. My advice is to only buy this pass (or any pass, for that matter) if you are fairly certain you can find an EXCESS of included things you actually want to do. You will certainly be disappointed if you buy them in an attempt to save money on just a few attractions you are interested in. And if you do buy the pass, expect to stand in line at the most popular attractions for longer than people who don't have the pass.
And the minor problem at Top of the Rock? That attraction is included in their "skip the line" list. But that isn't even how that attraction works. You go there and make an appointment for a time to go up, and they give you the earliest time available regardless of how you are paying. The New York Pass doesn't get you any sort of priority access to Top of the Rock. The attraction itself offers a $75 ticket option that gets you immediate access, but that is not included with the New York Pass.
