My fiance and I went to Tom’s Town for drinks and a tour on a recent trip to KC. Being from out of state, we didn’t know anything about the place or the city’s history with prohibition. Appearance-wise, the bar/dining area is gorgeous as is the design on the Tom’s town bottles and labels. When we got in, we were a bit early for the tour, so we got drinks from the bar. I really can only stomach sweet drinks and the bartender was super accommodating and made me a gimlet. My fiance got a drink called the angry goat, which included strawberry habanero syrup, and recalls it as being “damn good.” Our tour guide, Morgan, was lovely, informative, and is clearly a genuine fan of the establishment and not just doing a job. The tour itself was about average length for a small size distillery tour, and I did like that they included a short (~10 min) film on KC’s prohibition history and Tom Pendergast himself. I liked that Morgan went into some background about the different alcohols themselves during the tour and the tasting. (For instance, I knew from being on other distillery tours before about the difference between whiskey/whisky/bourbon, but until this tour knew nothing about gin.) I personally hate whiskey/bourbon so I didn’t like whichever one that was we tasted, but my fiance said it was great. The vodka was also very smooth and we both agreed that the gin especially was the best gin either of us had ever tasted. When the your was over, we ended up staying for food, which was also delicious.
