My mother and I were very excited to go inside this building. The staff were unwilling to talk about the building due to a "family dispute." Much of the building is not accessible to the public and the windows are covered by thick drapes. Disappointing, Definitely not worth the price.

A friend and I visited this weekend and we were blown away. The museum is in a beautiful mansion on beautiful grounds. This is a family museum and the father and son who run the museum are enthusiastic about turquoise and education. There were few visitors while we were there, and most of the three hours were were there either the father or son was with us telling us incredible stories about the museum, family, turquoise, everything. I am definitely going to go back next time I am visiting Albuquerque. Because of COVID they are having you buy tickets online. We were able to walk in off the street and come in right away, but if you don't buy tickets online ahead of time, you may end up having to wait until the next entry time.

On the day I visited the museum was staffed by the founding family, with the curator and executive director on hand to answer any questions I had. We had some great conversations and it was more like a private tour of this wonderful museum. The building is beautiful, and immediately upon entrance you learn the history of the family and the museum and get a sense of the beauty of turquoise with the striking chandelier. The exhibits tell you everything you would want to know about turquoise, from the mining of it to the science behind its formation, trade routes, its uses, how to detect a counterfeit, turquoise in modern culture and of course many examples from around the world. I planned on spending about an hour here, but since I am a reader I spent a couple of hours and I learned so much. If you are an educator like me, you will appreciate that the displays cover every subject matter from science to math to literature and social studies. This was definitely one of the highlights of my extended stay in Albuquerque—and I brought home some terrific souvenirs from the gift shop as well. A hidden gem (no pun intended)!
