My mother took this train in 1933 from Clarkdale to connect with the line to take her to Tucson to college. We were fascinated with the first leg of the route she needed to take. The passage through the slag dump showing how the tracks were protected from molten 'lava' by scaffolding and corrugated sheet metal was amazing, but most travelers would have no idea how that could impact the safety of the train and the tracks. It was rather confusing regarding food with the tickets. It appeared that there would be a charcuterie tray on board with beverages available, but a text the day prior said to be at the depot one hour prior to get a lunch as no food would be served on the train. We arrived to get our lunch as recommended and got a mediocre burger that was included with our ticket. When we arrived on the train, we found a rather surprisingly good charcuterie tray for each person. Our hostess in our car, Shea, was delightful. She was not only able to manage drink orders and give information about the tour, but entertained a group of 4-8 year old travelers who were not really interested in the scenery. I think this is more of a nature and history ride than some of the other rail excursions offered. There are no fake animals to see, as some other tours have. If you see wildlife it would be real. We saw duck, duck, goose and a flock of wild turkeys. There are no train robbers or other entertainment of that kind. We did this in mid march so the foliage was bland but I can imagine fall and summer would be vibrant coloring. I highly recommend this tour for those who want to experience a trip to the past without needing to be entertained for the sake of entertainment.

Of course the scenery. I loved the stories the wonderful staff told along the way. Have since looked up the stories of the Empty Mansions.
