Des vues étonnantes sur une frontière sauvage et vibrante, des chevalets historiques, des ponts et un tunnel de 7000 pieds ne sont que quelques-uns des points forts nichés dans des formations rocheuses inhabituelles, des pinacles de roche rouge et des falaises cramoisies. As a rail enthusiast and also someone that enjoys wine and the great outdoors the Verde Canyon Railroad ticks lots of boxes for me and my wife and so we booked a first class excursion between Christmas and New Year. Overall, the trip itself was excellent. The scenery is amazing and the pace is leisurely enough that you don't miss anything. The first class car we were in was well maintained with comfortable seats. Our attendant Mona was friendly and professional and looked after us during the trip. As part of the first class experience you get individually boxed nibbles (cheese, crackers, meats, and brownies plus grapes and berries) and a champagne toast. We also ordered a bottle of champagne for the outward part of the trip as well as a beer and some wine for the return. Everything is reasonably priced and the drinks were nicely chilled. The depot is quaint with some interesting information to read and historical artefacts to look at. The recommendation seems to be to arrive around two hours before the train's departure but that's a little ambitious. Arriving 60 - 75 minutes ahead of time is more than enough time, even allowing for check-in, getting your temperature checked, picking up tickets, getting something to eat and browsing the gift store. The major downside to the ride is the constant (and I mean constant, non-stop) commentary and railroad songs that are played throughout the trip - literally from the moment you board until you leave. I pity the poor staff who have to endure this day in, day out. It would be nice to have a designated quiet coach where there's no commentary and music. A written guide could be provided instead perhaps? Alternatively the commentary and music could be played in one direction only? The commentary was also out of sync with the journey. We were in the middle of the train and a lot of the landmarks referred to were way past us before we knew to look for them. I would rate the overall experience as "Good" rather than "Very Good" but Tripadvisor doesn't have a good category and the Railroad definitely deserves better than just an "Average" rating. Unfortunately the commentary and, more to the point, the music *really* detracts from the undeniable beauty of the trip. The landscape and scenery is truly amazing but I found myself getting frustrated with the overbearing audio. The railroad is definitely worth visiting but you might want to bring some earplugs with you!
