Whitney Plantation
The Whitney Plantation offers you an opportunity to experience the story of plantation life in Louisiana from the perspective of those enslaved. It does a good job of not glorifying the ownership. The 45 min drive home gives you a quick chance to nap prior to hitting the town.

We had a terrific day of kayaking, eating and exploring on our full day tour. Sam, our guide was delightful. Personable, engaging and particularly knowledgeable about the history of the people and the place. The kayak portion lasted a couple of hours (about 3 miles). Lots of beautiful wildlife: herons, egrets, alligators, turtles. An important note: the tour did not go to the Whitney Plantation. Instead we toured Oak Alley. I’d suggest that if Whitney is the thing you want to see then consider an alternative tour. I found Oak Alley to be a pretty strong option.

We do our best to make sure we go to Whitney Plantation for our combo tours, though they sell out frequently. Calling in advance helps quite a bit when booking.

Took the combination swamp kayak/plantation trip with them in early February. Sam was our guide and he was both professional and personable. Along with 8 other people we were picked up at 9 a.m. in a van to head out to the kayak site first. Stopped to pick up a trailer loaded with kayaks close to the put-in spot. Through earlier emails we were told we could have single kayaks yet all that were on the trailer were double kayaks. We are experienced kayakers and found this part of the trip both interesting and educational, given that we do not have this type of environment back home. Then off to Oak Alley Plantation - we had really been hoping for Whitney Plantation which is what where we thought we would be going. Oak Alley was okay, but I think Whitney (or even Laura) would have been more interesting. Oak Alley is the more well known, but that doesn’t make it the best. Their website still clearly states that you go to the Whitney plantation or if that one is too busy, Laura plantation. The on-site tour guide for the plantation gave us lots of interesting information but really had no passion - his spiel was memorized and he was just regurgitating it by rote. We had lunch in the restaurant at Oak Alley (not included in the trip price) which was really good!

I understand your frustration with the plantation portion. The Whitney Plantation no longer holds spots for smaller operators as they have began appealing to larger tour companies i.e. Grayline and Cajun Encounters. Our customers in the past much prefer the Oak Alley experience to Laura so we have since changed verbiage on our website as Whitney fills up weeks in advance. That said, please give us a call so that we may discuss in more detail how we could make it up to you. Thanks for the feedback and hope to have you back again in the future.

Sam was a great guide, we didn’t see too much wildlife (we went in January). The swamp was interesting, we did spot a couple of eagles! The Whitney plantation tour was great

Awesome! Birds are surely a main attraction during the wintertime! Louisiana hosts over 300 different species throughout the year! Thanks for paddlin' with us!
