I have always wanted to work up the nerve to take a hot air balloon ride. Having celebrated a milestone birthday in June, I decided this was the year. I mentioned this to our wine tour company, Napa Valley Wine Excursions, as I was planning our trip and the owner of NVWE recommended Napa Valley Balloons. Our experience has always been that top-notch companies recommend top-notch companies and this was the case with NV Balloons. We received a confirmation months before our trip and then again a week before our trip. We received a confirmation pick-up call the night before (take advantage of the morning pick up offered. It's very early and usually dark--and you really don't know where you are going but know you don't want to be late!) We arrived--with 70+ other customers--and were greeted and directed to a dining room of a lovely winery for our orientation. They covered all safety items--but did it with humor and compassion. (I know I wasn't the only one standing there in fear for their lives.) By the time we finished the 15-20 minute intro and arrived at the launch site, I was ready to go. No apprehension; no anxiety; no fear. My husband was in shock. The launch was uneventful and peaceful. The basket was adequate for the 3 "bodies" in each compartment. Our "captain" kept us aware of where we were, what we were looking at, and strongly suggested we take our pictures to capture the beauty of Napa in the early morning. (The weather was perfect--always a plus.) The balloon was also equipped with a camera and pictures are forwarded to fliers the same day. A very unique perspective that cannot be captured by an individual's attempts. The sensation of simply floating was overwhelming. It was peaceful and quite (except for the propane/fire) and serene. I would do it again in a minute--which is not something I thought I'd ever say or write. The landing was smooth, precise and, again, uneventful. We were taken back to the meeting place and were welcomed with mimosas and a well-prepared, plentiful breakfast. The entire staff was welcoming and at our service. This is the way to fly.
