Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Seward Round-Trip Same Day Return

Departing from downtown Anchorage, the Coastal Classic Train travels south along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords – before departing on the return journey at 6 pm that evening, arriving back to Anchorage by 10:15 pm.

We ended up staying in Seward for 3 days, just because. The train ride was nice. Wasn't impressed though with the cleanliness too much. When we got back on the train returning there was paper on the floor, spots where looked like someone had spilled something, just not clean as our trip to Seward. On the trip back we seen eagles, moose (with babies) 2 packs of beluga whales (which was amazing) we seen a baby bear, sheep high up in the mountain, salmon. That may have been it but it was sure a lot of wild life to see from the comforts of the train. They offered food at like a deli area and offered meals depending on the time of day you were traveling. All in all I say this was a good trip.

Was there 09/14, just when aspen leaves were at their peak. It was spectacular. The train was comfortable and very clean, they would slow down whenever the conductor saw wildlife so we could take pictures. I would definitely use them again

We took this train to Seward and back. It was great and we did see a bald eagle. It was roomy and you could get a meal on it if you liked. We opted to go the cheaper route and not pay for the elevated seats on the second floor but, that being said, they do have an observation car for us lower class people and there weren't many people up there at all. It was great fun to watch the tunnels go over you head and to be able to see all around you. Not sure why, if it was close to the end of the season or what but there weren't many people on it. They had a gal narrating for the entire way....not constantly but enough so you knew what to look for or where you were. I would do this again.
