The train journey from Denali to Anchorage is a good alternative to driving, even though it takes a bit longer. Travelling in First Class offers great views through the scenic glass roof and 2 good quality and tasty meals in the restaurant. Also included are 2 free alcoholic beverages per passenger. We were instructed to leave our small carry-on cases to be stored in the luggage compartment (unnecessary and a hassle). Do not expect fully adjustable first class seats or any form of privacy ... do move around a lot and take in the views from the viewing platform. The First Class experience was also somewhat interrupted by very noisy co-passengers and crying babies ... NOTE - do take earphones and music along if you want peace and quiet.

We took the train from Anchorage to Denali and back. The food was better than expected. The reindeer sausage for breakfast was particularly good. Spend as much time out on the observation cars as possible. On the ride up, it rained almost the entire time. There were only 2 or 3 of us outside. We spotted a number of moose and bald eagles, but couldn't see Denali. The weather on the ride back was picture perfect and many more people were outside. We saw Denali (around the Talkeetna area) but only 1 moose and eagle. There are any number of photo opportunities along the way. When we arrived at Denali the hotel (Crows Nest) handle the luggage transfer. Coming back into Anchorage, the luggage handling process was a bit chaotic. All the bags are unloaded in large crates and lined up side-by-side. Everyone stands around the same area watching for their bags. It can been a little frantic. After you retrieve your bags there is a line of taxis right at the curb.

The Denali Star train is a not to be missed Alaskan experience. We boarded the train in Anchorage; ushered aboard by a guard in a uniform reflecting the golden age of train travel. As we planned to alight in Talkeetna for a 2 night stopover, and it is only 3 hours along the route, we booked a regular carriage. It was clean and comfortable with big windows to take in the scenery. For our next leg, from Talkeetna to Fairbanks, we booked the gold star carriage. These carriages are spacious, have large windows that wrap around the edge of the roof and include your meals in the dining car below. They also include two beverages from the bar, we took these out onto the open viewing platform at the rear - a fantastic, albeit chillier option. Commentary is available for the whole trip and is relaxed enough to include moose and other wildlife sightings. We were surprised to discover that the scenery wasn't just around the Denali area, but most of the trip was incredibly scenic making it a very special journey.
