We did the Civil Rights tour. Like everyone else said, it was fantastic. The owner, Clay, was very organized, he sent a text in the morning to let us know exactly what time he would pick us up at our hotel. He was right on time, very friendly and answered all of our crazy questions. He did not rush anyone, and mentioned several times to take as long as you needed for pictures, etc. You could tell he enjoyed doing this tour and put his heart into it.
This is one of the best tours I have ever taken. It was not a cookie-cutter tour. You could tell that he did his own research about his city to put together the best tour possible. It's one thing to hear about the bombings in the city, but another to drive (and stop) by the actual houses and still see the bricks out of place. It really brought the history to life. I liked that Clay even passed around actual Poll Tax receipts from the city. He took us to parts of the city that don't normally see tourists. There were so many little details that really added to the tour. We went to the Civil Rights museum after the tour, and while it was a great museum, I felt we would have missed out on so much if we hadn't gone on the tour with Clay.
I would recommend this tour to anyone coming to Birmingham, it's a great way to learn about the city. I only wish I had known about this company sooner, we would have loved to do some of the their other tours.
