Don't expect to be amazed by the sights in downtown Birmingham, it has a center of town much like many US cities: some older buildings, some timid attempts to relaunch the place over the years, lots of empty spaces, lots of run down places, not much life even during the daytime.
However the inconspicuous landmarks have a profound meaning if they are part of a story of the evolution of the city and of the Civil Rights movement. Our guide, Mr. Clay senior did an outstanding job at bringing facts and situations alive. We were able to really understand what happened in the late 60s not only in Birmingham but throughout the South. Too bad the tour lasted only half a day! Great job Mr. Clay, thanks.
