I decided to do the Boone Plantation Tour which was really good, it was just a shame that it rained all day! It’s a half day tour which takes you 10 miles outside of the city to America’s oldest working farm and plantation dating back to 1691. Once you get dropped off, there’s a range of activities to do around the plantation and the driver comes to pick you back up 3 hours later. Thankfully our driver came back a little earlier and we (myself and a couple from Boston) were ready to go home away from the rain! There’s actually beautiful gardens there but it was just too wet to go exploring! The rest of the plantation was really good though! There’s 4 main things to do (6 when it’s not raining) around the property; the slave street cabins, the slave talk, the house tour and the Gullah presentation. The slave talk is only about 10 minutes long and reinforces the information which in on the wall in each of the cabins - each cabin focuses on a different theme or part of slave history. The house tour was very interesting and it’s still lived in by the family who owe the plantation (not the original slave owner family though). The Gullah presentation was definitely the highlight! A lady spoke for about 30 minutes telling us about her Gullah heritage and culture including their language and the sweet grass baskets! She was excellent! This is definitely a must do if you’re visiting Charleston - if you have your own car though, don’t bother booking the tour as it’s cheaper to drive and just pay for entry into the Plantation, I didn’t have a car so I had to pay for the transportation as well. My tour guide filled me in on some of Charleston’s history along the way and he was a lovely guy but it was still a lot to pay for a 20 mile round trip.

Well worth a visit. Grounds are nice. Interesting history of slave times (including a presentation on it), the path of ownership and products produced. Wish photos could be taken inside the main house, even if flashless. Can’t go upstairs as is a (private residence). Be prepared for large crowds even on “off-days”.

Great educational tour. Enjoyed the Gullah speaker and walking through the slave cabins. Tours fill quick on warm days so do them before you walk around
