After enjoying Brooklyn a lot on foot for the last few years, we decided to mix things up and take a bike tour of as much of it as we could do in a day.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND doing this as a way to really get inside Brooklyn and doing it with Giro would be the best choice. I called in advance to ask a few questions and got a quick call back with all the information that I needed. So, on the hottest day of the summer, we showed up with our helmets and water (although they have both if you do not) to get on Giro's excellent equipment and ride with a great guide. We started by deciding to do the 20 mile tour instead of the 15 mile so we could see more (and Brooklyn is pretty flat). Our guide, John, encouraged us to do that for a fuller tour. He gets more serious cyclers and less serious than us as well, so he can customize the itinerary. He was fun as well as knowledgeable about the architecture, the history, and the current culture of all the neighborhoods that we pedaled through. They keep the group small, and it seemed easy for him to keep everyone informed safely. He was personable and interested in our experiences as well. Since it was so hot, we took a few breaks for some insider spot stops that he knew- for great smoothies and some delicious samples of indie businesses, and drinks. We had never done a guided bike tour before. We have done self-guided tours in Italy, Croatia and France, Amsterdam, and various states, but having a guide in this city was much better. We had to worry less about where we were going so we could open our eyes to everything else! Highly recommend it. Go with Giro! Next time we're in town, we'll do his Manhattan tour.
