Our tour guide, Amy, was the best part of our trip to Charleston. On Wednesday, we arrived in Charleston and walked around the historic district. We saw a lot of beautiful houses, figured out where Fort Sumter was, and walked through Battery Park. What was missing was "how did all of this get here." We booked our Thursday tour, and were so lucky to get Amy as our guide. She had an incredible knowledge of the history of the 350 year history of the city. We never would have known the difficulties of the first settlers, the wall around the initial city, why there is a "French Quarter," why some streets are labelled "wharf" (even though they are solid ground), and so many other fascinating historical facts. And her knowledge of the history of so many of the beautiful homes (such as their "Barbados" connection, why the porches are on the south, etc.), the churches (why there are so many religious denominations, and the types of architecture), and how the streets were constructed, really explained the city to us. Her tour is not to be missed. It is just exceptional.
