Generally four people to a jeep as you drive the old Denali highway in a convoy of 8 jeeps. Great views of mountains, rivers, lakes, kettle ponds and tundra. Communication by CB radio. Staff are extraordinary. Very attentive. We saw a few animals, including moose, caribou and birds. Some in our group saw a wolverine and porcupine. Reason for 4 stars instead of 5? There is a real difference in being in the first car and being further back. We were car no. 5. At times, due to dust, the convoy could be stretched a quarter mile.

I am surprised that some of the other reviewers have rated this tour poorly. We did a 2 nights 3 days in Denali, during our visit to Alaska in the lean season (Aug30-Sep1st) and did the tour on the last day (morning trip). We got our own jeep (2 adults and 1 child). The jeeps were in great shape, my husband had a great time driving it (i did not attempt, due to my limited driving faculties). My son had a comfortable ride in his child seat. The tour begins from a point further up on the Denali highway. The operators kept us well-informed of the itinerary and what we could expect. The tour leader (who rode his own jeep and led the way) was top-notch, he engaged us constantly through the radio and also during the stops. He offered to take pictures for everyone in the group and went out of his way to find spots that are the most photogenic/scenic. The landscapes and views were breath-taking to say the least and everyone seemed to have a great time, we surely did. There were enough toilet breaks (except for my little one, who understandably has a weaker bladder, especially given the weather :) There was a snack break and we treated ourselves to some calories. We did some extra stop-overs as Denali was in her full-glory. The only disappointment was the visibly absent wildlife. But we did spot a few Reindeer from a distance. But on the whole i think it was the guide who made this trip exciting and he surely had great enthusiasm for the place and we could not help but be taken-in :)

Actually, right next to the Husky Homestead. The Jeeps were all brand new (April 2015), with automatic transmissions. They put four people in each Jeep, unless you upgrade…then it’s just you and your friend in the Jeep. Hopefully, you get paired with another couple you can stomach for4+ hours. You leave the starting point and drive ~20 minutes to Cantwell. There are CB radios in all the Jeeps and that’s how the tour guide communicates with everyone. The tour guide does provide a little narration. At Cantwell you hang a left and get on the Denali Highway, which quickly turns into a dirt road. This road runs about 130 miles east to the next town, which is Paxson. The road is a little rough and you need to be vigilant to dodge pot holes and washboard bumps. There are appropriately spaced bathroom breaks but, as with any other outback area, you will find no flush toilets. Just nicer, more permanent, versions of a portapotti. As far as things to see, the vistas are expansive. What you probably won’t see is much wildlife, or Mount Denali. This part of Alaska is open to subsistence hunting (unlike Denali National Park, no hunting period) and the animals are few and far between. I was able to spot a moose about a mile away with binoculars but that was it. At the halfway point (~2 hours in) we parked in a large pull off area. The guide provided snacks (good one, candy bars, fritos, etc) and drinks (including soda instead of just water). After the nosh most Jeeps switched drivers and we headed back. As a whole, this tour was kinda boring. If you’re interested in wildlife then you need to take the Tundra Wilderness Tour. If you was be expansive vistas then this tour is for you. Not recommended.
