We've made it a tradition to take a walking food tour of places we visit and we're certainly glad we continued that tradition on our Easter Weekend visit to Denver. I wasn't really sure what cuisine(s) Denver was known for, but received a real education on this tour. It lasted about 3 hours and included 6 unique stops (we also opted for the cocktail "add-on" option that included an adult beverage at 3 of the stops). Chris was our guide and he was fantastic. A unique blend of Brooklyn Italian foodie and stand-up comic. And equally talented at explaining the uniqueness of each cuisine we sampled, its ingredients and history and what makes it special, while cracking up all 12 of us on the tour with his quips and jokes. It was like Top Chef meets Last Comic Standing. The tour began with a unique Italian pizzeria (go figure, Chris!) that is one of only 300 pizzerias in the US AVPN certified, meaning that this association, based in Naples, Italy, certifies that this pizzeria uses only original, approved ingredients and techniques consistent with pizzas made in Naples, the birthplace of pizza, including special flour and tomatoes imported from the Naples area. The tour ended with churros con chocolate at an Iberian restaurant. I'm not much of a foodie, so if you're not either, I translate "curros con chocolate" in my simple vernacular as an awesome doughy donut rolled in sugar and a little cinnamon accompanied by some of the darkest, richest melted chocolate imaginable. The perfect ending to a perfect day of tasting unique cuisines. Other stops included a local restaurant and butcher shop that prides itself on using all parts of any animal it processes in some way on its menu ("snooter to pooter" as they say), native american cuisine, local cheeses and jams/jellies and other spreads, world famous gourmet hot dogs (ours was a reindeer - or caribou for young ones) among others. And if your vegetarian or vegan, just let them know when you sign-up. We had a vegan in our tour group and each stop had something special prepared for her so she could enjoy her own unique experience as well. There's maybe a total of one mile in walking the tour and it's very easy walking. Anyone with comfortable shoes can handle the walking part of this tour. Between eating stops, Chris was also an entertaining and informative tour guide around the city as well. And I'd recommend coming to the tour with an appetite. We've been on many other tours that were enjoyable, or maybe we didn't care for some of the food, and left feeling like we needed a meal. Not so here...we were all very full and, in fact, skipped dinner that night. I can recommend this tour, and our guide, Chris, highly and without reservation. I hope that if you book it for yourself, you have as great a time and experience as our family did.
