We spent days trying to book a spot on this charter. When we'd ring, we'd get told the weather wasn't appropriate for fishing, even though it was clear blue skies with absolutely no wind and we could see countless other boats out in the ocean fishing. We even walked ourselves down to the Marina to their offices, the first two days they were completely unattended until finally on the third day we got an answer.
We were told to arrive at 1:30, half an hour before scheduled departure. We ended up waiting until 2:30 at which point we enquired when we'd be leaving. We were told that the crew were not finished lunch yet and that we were waiting on them. The skipper then magically appeared informing us that because numbers were not high enough, we would all have to agree to pay an extra $10 each to cover the costs of not having a full boat. I'm sorry, but if I rock up to a concert and it hasn't been fully sold out, am I told to chip in to cover the difference for that? No.
We all begrudgingly agreed to pay and boarded the boat. All up there were 6 of us, however there were 5 "regulars" who were already on the boat who were on very good terms with the skipper. Once we took off, we had to wait at one point for the regulars to cast their lines and catch live bait, which they only used for themselves. They were also entitled to free access to food and drinks on the boat, whilst the rest of us had to pay. At one point the boat ran out of both bottled water and pepsi, as the regulars had constantly helped themselves to them.
Once the fishing finally started, the regulars, using lures and superior rods were hooking fish left, right and centre. Whilst those of us who had paid were busy getting our lines tangled (they made us all fish over the same side of the boat) and catching nothing with inadequate, sun-dried bait.
Aside from the skipper, there were two staff on board. Cayla (I think her name was) was very helpful and was the only one working the whole trip. There was another staff members whose name I didn't catch, who spent the entire time fishing with the regulars and using foul and inappropriate language which made me glad I didn't bring my kids along with me to hear. He would also get visibly aggravated when any of the PAYING passengers got their lines tangled with him.
In the end, whilst the regulars were reeling fish in like it was going out of fashion, the 6 of us who paid did not catch a SINGLE FISH. It felt like the captain did very little to help us out, and would only change spots to allow the regulars to trawl.
All in all, we would have been better finding a local with a boat, paying for their gas and renting our own equipment. Would not recommend.
The only reason this company is recommended is because they are the only ones in South Beach.
