The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is the preeminent institution for research and preservation of history across the Black diaspora. The institution archives more than ten million items pertaining the Black experience. There is usually an exhibit within the facility for public viewing. Our tour guide, Wilson, was very personable, down to earth and most of all knowledgeable. I came with a desire to have my interest in Harlem's history advanced and it was. I like to read books, however, interacting with an individual and going to actual buildings and streets to discuss history is very engaging. We were blessed with meeting the son of an icon on this trip and I appreciated the short highlight of Billy Holiday the most. The Harlem Renaissance Tour was a fantastic experience. Neil, our guide, is extremely knowledgeable and personable. The tour was more like spending time with a scholar and friend from the neighborhood than a typical guide who has memorized a handful of facts. The tour has a set route, but Neil also incorporated new elements to respond to our questions and areas of interest. I'm hard to please when it comes to organized tours and I really can't say enough good things about this experience. Check it out if you have any interest in this neighborhood or the cast of amazing characters from the Harlem Renaissance.
