Frieda is an incredibly courageous woman! She shares her journey as a Hasid leaving a very conservative community. Frieda shares a very balanced view of life in and out of the community. She is candid as she answers your questions. I found her fascinating!! Reading the book”Unorthodox” before the tour was very helpful with background. The pastries and food samples at the deli were so good! Loved the earbud sound system provided by Frieda. So easy to hear! Thank you!

Frieda is a wealth of knowledge, but be prepared for a rigorous three-hour walk. More stops would make this friendly for everyone

Teacher Kaz, Thanks for this review - it is helpful to hear! I will implement your suggestions where possible. As the weather gets warmer, I'll make sure to route us near parks where we can sit a bit (besides the sitting in the beginning and at the deli at the end, which we always do). But I am so sorry to hear that it was too much! I wish you had told me during the tour, because I would have changed the pace or shortened our walk. Our tour is always a circular route, but I expand or contract the distance based on weather, how comfortable everyone is, if there is something interesting happening further down the road, etc. I can always, always change things up to make sure no one is suffering. The tour is organized but flexible and it is not meant to be a workout. In fact, there are caloric elements that result in a serious potential net increase! (yum) Keep in mind that this is the *most* insular of all Hasidic neighborhoods in Brooklyn. In other Hasidic neighborhoods (ie, Crown Heights) you can access public spaces like synagogues to sit or be shielded from weather, you can arrange to go into various institutions. This is Williamsburg. A world much more inaccessible. This is the only tour specializing in Williamsburg. I've been doing this for many years and have good relationships with shopkeepers who will welcome us in, seat us for meals (even though there are very few sit-down restaurants) and I am always on the lookout for creative solutions. Still, the limits in Hasidic Williamsburg will always be tremendous. But the flipside of the discomfort and lack of access is that you get a very raw experience. You get to see the real everyday experience. Some notes to other potential guests who are concerned about the physical challenge: 1. We do sit in the beginning for introductions and at the end at a deli. In the summer, we sit in parks too. 2. You can email me to let me know if you have mobility issues and we can make sure to adjust the pace. 3. Some people have had success with a cane chair, which is like a cane with a little pull-out seat. In fact, I have one at home and can bring it upon request. The pull-out chair that pops out of the cane is a tiny seat, maybe fits a quarter tush! But it works for some. :) 4. During the tour, please tell me. Or if you are shy, give a kvetch and I will know. I have a fine-tuned kvetch radar! 5. Wear good shoes. Happy traveling!

Frieda is a natural tour guide. Warm and extremely knowledgeable. No question is too trivial. She really wants you to understand the day to day life of the residents of the community. Highly recommend this tour!
