Muzeum Portu Niepodległościowego
Odwiedź dwa statki National Historic Landmark, krążownik Olympia z 1892 r. oraz okręt podwodny Becuna z czasów II wojny światowej i zimnej wojny. Te statki będą miały drabiny, włazy i przejścia do nawigacji. Historyczne statki nie są dostępne dla ADA. Przeglądaj dwa piętra muzeum z eksponatami obejmującymi różne tematy morskie. Galerie obejmują: Katastrofy na Delaware: historyczne katastrofy i współcześni bohaterowie, Tides of Freedom: African Presence on the Delaware River, Tattoo Lounge, Titanic Philadelphians, Boat Gallery, Underwater Gallery i inne.

Visit two National Historic Landmark ships, the 1892 Cruiser Olympia and the WWII and Cold War Submarine Becuna. Olympia is known for being Admiral Dewey's flagship during the Spanish American War and also receiving the honor of bringing the soldier for internment for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. Becuna is a more modern day example of the technology and bravery of submariners in WWII and the Cold War. These ships will have ladders, hatches & gangways to navigate. The historic ships are not ADA accessible. Explore two floors of the museum with exhibits that cover various maritime topics. Galleries include: Disasters on the Delaware: Historic Disasters and Modern Day Heroes, Tides of Freedom: African Presence on the Delaware River, Tattoo Lounge, Titanic Philadelphians, Boat Gallery, Underwater Gallery, and more. Observe working wooden boats builders in action, in the Workshop on the Water and as they build the schooner Diligence. This gunboat was built in 1797 in Philadelphia to defend this young country from pirates. This new exhibit and ship is inside the museum, making it all the more impressive.

My main interest in visiting this particular museum was because the USS Cruiser Olympia is berthed there. America's first Unknown Soldier was brought back to the United States from France on the Olympia after WWI. If I remember history correctly, three Unknown Soldiers were disinterred from their resting places overseas. Their caskets were placed in a room. A soldier was selected to carry a bouquet of white roses and walk among the caskets and determine which one would be selected as the first Unknown Soldier to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. When he made his decision, he placed the bouquet of roses on top of the casket. I have posted still photos of the process of placing his casket aboard the Olympia and the trip back to the United States. There is a lot to cover in this museum including the establishment and history of the United States Navy, racism in the military and slavery. There is a large parking area for the Museum. You can purchase a ticket just for the Museum or a combination ticket for the Museum and the Ships in the harbor. We purchased the combination ticket because we wanted to see the Olympia the Submarine Becuna and the sailing ship. The adult combination ticket is $18.00 and the Senior or Military/Retired Military is $14.00. There are clean restrooms on the first floor and all major exhibits are on the second floor. There is a lot to see. There is also a children's area on the main floor by the ticket counter.

My husband and I used our CAMM membership (Council of American Maritime Museums) for a reciprocal admission to this museum. Our home museum is the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. CBMM is so well done and laid out and includes top notch displays, so this was a little disappointing in comparison. Compared to the Mariner's Museum in Newport News VA, the Maine Mariner's museum, and Nauticus in Norfolk VA, this place is a little weak. They do have a lot of children's displays. Some of the displays look like they could use a good refreshing. The carpet throughout the building is also pretty worn and old. There was a well done display on Africans on the Delaware River. This was new, well displayed, and nicely interactive. I enjoyed the information on the USS Olympia. I read about the Steamboat New Jersey disaster and the oil tanker collision near Marcus Hook in the 1970's. There were a couple of computer games for kids focusing on these two events. The USS Lawrence display was well done. There was an interactive display on torching and welding where a kid can simulate these activities. Sadly, the two gloves that are used for the activity were completely ripped. It was actually sad to see this lack of attention to detail. While the museum could use some improvement, the boats were excellent. The USS Olympia was one of the best boat tours I have done. This ship was state of the art during its time. It was quite impressive and there is a lovely view from the top deck. The ship is kept cool by multiple fans. You can visit all three levels in good weather. The submarine Becuna was also very cool. As previously sad, you need to be of average size to visit this. The doorways are small. The inside of the sub was very impressive. So here's what I think, and this is not my field at all, so take it for what it's worth. But I am sure there are college degrees where students learn how to do museum exhibits. How about an internship where students come in and re-tool and re-theme some of the more lack luster exhibit areas? I think this museum has tons of potential and many good displays and with a little work it could be so much more.
