Small group, with very individualized attention for the members in my group. Guide kept close eye on us all, providing a safe experience. Provided us with cultural and ecological info (pertinent to the area we were in). While giving us freedom to explore our environs.

I have been on a number of snorkel trips over the years. This one was by far the best. We had originally booked the Honalua paddle, but weather issues there forced us to choose a different tour. We chose Mākena because I had never explored that area; it is gorgeous. We came from Kaanapali area and the drive was worth it. John Hess was our guide and he really made the difference. He was warm, encouraging and was like a private guide. He instructed us, all the while reminding us how well we were doing even as he provided gentle correction. He demonstrated that his greatest desire was to share his love of the ocean, sea life and paddling with each of us. He was really committed to our success and enjoyment. And we always felt safe. We took the 4 hr tour which was NOT too long. The extra hour gave us time to enjoy and explore. I recommend it. The paddling was not too challenging for this 58 year old woman. Others on the tour were middle aged and moderately fit. It was all good. I visit Hawaii every year. I will definitely do this paddle trip with John Hess when I return!

We booked the 4 hour tour and we excited to spend the morning on the water. Our guide, John Hess, was excellent from the beginning. His "not so brief" briefing was informative and well rehearsed. It was obvious he had groups in the past that were problematic, so his briefing was designed to head off problems before they started. He was engaging and answered all questions by the group of six. Once in the water, he was encouraging and complimentary. He even offered to take photos with one of the couple's camera (for them). He took us to a couple of sites to snorkel and both were filled with plenty to see. He dove down and took lots of pics and pointed out the sea life for all of us. He made the trip a success. On the way back, it was obvious the weather was getting rougher and the ocean was not easy to navigate. He suggested we cut the tour short and we agreed. He offered to give us the difference between the 3 and 4 hour tour back as a refund. We simply offered to give him the difference as a tip. We did not see the other two couples offer up a tip after the trip, but I hope they did. In general, these tour guides live on the tips, so please consider this when booking.
