Great day trip idea from Boston! The add-on, 3-hour island tour once arriving in Martha’s Vineyard is an absolute must. It gave us a great overview of the island and its six townships. The stops in Edgartown and Aquinnah give you just enough time to take a stroll and do some shopping if you wish. The final stop back in Oak Bluffs gives you a couple hours to check out the Campground Gingerbread houses and grab lunch at one of the local eateries before heading back.
The guides from Boston and on the island were extremely knowledgeable on both their history and local happenings with plenty of recommendations for food, excursions, events, and so forth.
For those wondering about logistics, pick up and drop off are prompt and timely. The entire day is about a 12-hour day, with pick up between 6-6:45AM and back in Boston at your pickup/drop off location around 6:30PM. There’s a quick 20 minute stop on the way to Martha’s Vineyard for breakfast and bathroom breaks - our stop was at a McDonald’s/Dunkin Donuts plaza. There are no stops on the return trip to Boston.
The tour guides on Martha’s Vineyard are located right at the ferry drop off area so there’s no hassle in locating your guide.
I highly recommend this trip for someone looking for a broad and general overview of the Vineyard with some time allotted for shopping, dining, and leisure. Will definitely plan for more time on the Vineyard now that we have a good grasp of the island. A return trip to revisit Oak Bluffs and Edgartown with leisure is definitely warranted.
We enjoyed learning about the Vineyard’s rich history and it’s active native population in Aquinnah. While the Vineyard is today known as a retreat for the wealthy, its’ history in whaling, fishing, native and tribal lands/people, and host of dignitaries that lived/live on the island was something that really had an impact on us.

Thank you so much for this incredibly detailed 5 star review of Boston's ORIGINAL Martha's Vineyard Day trip. You described our trip perfectly. (Would you like a job? Haha!) I am so happy to hear how much that you enjoyed your tour of the island. I also agree that the island is well worth multiple visits, but if you only have a day New England Trips is the way to go!
