This was an experience I will never forget. The drive to the Matanuska Glacier takes approximately two and a half hours from Anchorage, but the drive flew by thanks to our guide, Lori's, knowledge and descriptions of the history and geography of the region and just the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you all the way there.
You are able to drive almost all of the way to the toe of the glacier, so the actual hiking involved is relatively modest. Thanks to the experienced guides on the glacier and the ice spikes you attach to your boots, walking on the glacier feels almost like hiking a nature trail. Once on the glacier, the experience and views are stunning. The guides do everything to ensure you stay safe on the hike and the information they share about the glacier and how it is constantly evolving was fascinating.
Unless you are Lori and get to do this every other day, for mere mortals like me, this was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.
