I did my four open water dives through Extended Horizons for my scuba certification and it was incredible! Emma was my instructor and she was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and helpful. As a pretty awesome bonus, she pointed out different sea creatures on our dives and identified things I never would’ve been able to on my own. Highly recommend going through Extended Horizons - it was a great experience and I can’t wait to do more dives now that I’m certified!

Recommended to me by Ritz Carton Concierge for getting my kids, 13 and 14 yo boy and girl, certified. Figured they would work with a great company. Was not disappointed. The kids loved Emma, their young but competent divemaster. My wife and I dove with Gustavo off Mala pier on their last checkout dive which was difficult entry/exit but well worth it and actually one of my best dives in 30 years - like watching the Discovery Channel live. A day after their 3 day certification course with my wife and I a little tired from devoting so much time on the vacation to the kids diving, my kids were begging me to go diving again the next day (which told me everything about their experience). I texted Eric, the head of the company from dinner, and he had nothing available the next day in daytime, but arranged a custom night dive for us in Black Rock the following night. He assured me the kids were ready for their first dive after Junior Open Water to be a dive at night. He even sent the divemaster who trained them as well as a second divemaster with the 4 of us to make me comfortable with this. Everyone did great, the night dive was beautiful, and I could see underwater the kids were well trained at this level. I would characterize this operation as highly professional and friendly and can't wait to go back out with them as well. Highly recommend.

I am a beginner diver (25 dives total) and went with Extended Horizons because of their small group size (total 3 divers in my group). For this they charge a premium price point (about 60% higher than other companies for the same dive sites) which I was comfortable with due to the group size. On the positive side - small group which makes you feel safer. The Mala pier dive site is phenomenal. Saw lots of turtles, and even sharks. Thought I’d be scared of sharks but it was an amazing experience. In terms of the diving company itself - I was left disappointed. The equipment was old. No integrated weight belts, no dive computer (we were doing shallow dives so it’s ok - but for the price point I would have liked to have it on me). More importantly they gave us shorties (dry suit which rests above the knees vs all the way to the ankles). This was a HUGE negative. The shore dives sites have lots of sharp coral and metal from a pier wreck. I was constantly in fear of getting injured - scraped my shin getting in to the mala dive site which kinda colored almost half my dive. I breathed my air a lot faster and it was just not a pleasant experience for me. The other person on my dive - she had a slightly malfunctioning regulator which made her nervous throughout the dive too (she was a much more experienced diver so she fared much better than me overall). More generally about the shore dive sites off Lahaina. 1) Ask how long you’ll have to walk from the parking lot (with your tanks on your back) to the start of the dive. There were companies with a separate driver (from the dive master) so they were getting dropped off very close to the site. In our case we ended up walking quite a bit. You might be comfortable with the walk, but just something to consider. 2) The black rock dive had a very strong current during our dive (no fault of the company) which made us quite tired. Getting out of the water with waves breaking in was a real challenge. I am still nursing a strained knee after repeatedly falling trying to get up and then exerting a lot of pressure on my knees to get up with the tanks. 3) Mala pier entry is super rocky - make sure you get good booties. Ours were just ok and not comfortable. Make sure you have full length dry suits with preferably padding on the knees and shin to protect against scrapes. My personal recommendation. The Mala site is AMAZING in terms of the wildlife - but do a boat dive if possible. The experience getting in and out from the shore didn’t feel worth it. On a happier note, here is me with some turtles at the turtle feeding station in Mala.
