We booked an evening trip (6.30 pm) to Mitai Māori Village cultural experience. Not cheap, at NZD 135 pp, (£68) but the experience kept one entertained for three hours; looking at the “hangi” ground oven; watching a canoe-full of warriors glide along the river, and seeing a live action show, illustrating the Māori peace ceremony, music, singing and combat techniques, including the famous haka. A great show, and fully “in your face”. After about 90 minutes you go back into the dining room, where a good selection of hangi food awaits you, though frankly I failed to taste the distinctive hangi quality of the meal. But portions were generous. After some questions from the floor, you are taken on a final, night-time tour of the forest, complete with glow-worms. It is all done on a large scale; about 200 guests for the evening and my only slight criticism is that that made taking us all to see things hard to manage effectively.
