As a family of 6 visiting from Canada, this was on the top Of our lost of things to do in Rotorua. We wanted to introduce our kids, ages 2, 5, 7, and 10 to the culture and history of New Zealand and the Maori people that are so precious to its story and current culture.
After we took our seats and had a glass of wine we were welcomed by Manu the MC for the evening. Although there were 21 countries represented, Manu was able to greet each “tribe” in their native tongue. Very impressive.
We watched a group of warriors paddle a Waka (canoe) up and down the spring before visiting the theatre where a traditional Maori village was recreated as a stage for the Mitai family to take us back in time with song, dance, sacred ceremony and the famous Haka! The wood fire and incense really set the stage for an engaging and authentic experience. Very skilled performers who love what they do, keep it up guys!
The Hangi meal which was baked underground with hot rocks and wood smoke for hour was revealed and we had a delicious buffet. My favourite was the chicken as it really absorbed a lot of the authentic Hangi flavour as it cooked.
The icing on the cake, besides our table mates we really enjoyed, was the night walk through the Forrest to view ancient buildings, then rainbow springs of fresh water and the glow worms along the trails. Do yourself a favour and hang back slightly so there are no flashlights around for the best viewing experience. Truly magical.
With 4 small kids, everything we do is a little stressful. This was a late night for the 2 and 5 year old but they made it through and this will be a great memory for them! I would say this is super family friendly!
Thanks for your hospitality and a wonderful experience.
