Wow, Marjorie Gray led us on a truly wondrous backcountry tour of her Monument Valley homeland in the Navajo Nation...we started, as all self-guided and private tours start, on the 17-mile loop road but then quickly ventured off the beaten path to visit several canyons, hogans, and valleys where we saw petroglyphs and pottery shards from Navajo ancestors...it was a cold day in early February and storm clouds were abundant yet did not rain but we did experience snow at higher elevations...Marjorie was a fantastic guide...hse knows her history, cultural geography and geology and went out of her way to make sure that we learned about her Navajo people and their history. If you take the backcounry tour, request Marjorie; you'll be as happy as we were. :-)
