Muthurajawela Marsh
Muthurajawela is the largest saline coastal peat bog in Sri Lanka. The Marsh together with the Negombo Lagoon form an integrated coastal wetland eco-system with marsh lagoon complex itself estimated to have originated around the year 5000 BC. The northern section of the marsh covering an area of 1,777ha was declared a sanctuary in July 1996 under the fauna & flora protection ordinance. The marsh is a major local and tourist attraction, primarily used for sightseeing and boating tours, and the area also supports local agriculture and forestry. Visitors to the region are guided through the sanctuary areas by the staff of the Muthurajawela Marsh Centre to avoid serious harm to the marsh ecosystem.

A really great trip by boat. The best sweet guy really paid attention to the animals we saw. And stopped the boat if we or he saw anything. Delicious melon and coconut ate and drank on the boat in a beautiful shady spot among the mangroves. I will definitely recommend this and also our nice taxi driver Roshan who stopped along the way to get us a sandwich and water. We certainly liked this. Our great thanks for this. Patrick and Nina

Great tour. If you want to see many birds, you should come in the morning. But even if you come later, you will have great nature and beautiful mangroves. Roshan was our driver to pick us up from the hotel. All very well organised Thank you

We had a fantastic tour seeing water monitors, and a large variety of birds (even in low season). Our guide was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and skilful in navigating through the Mangroves. The driver picked us up and dropped us back to our hotel in Negombo and was polite with very good English. We would really recommend the tour, the scenery is beautiful and there is plenty to see to keep even the little ones happy for a few hours
