After traveling to many places around the world and taking probably hundreds of tours/excursions, we were expecting to see Alaskan wildlife. What we saw were a few animals (lots of gulls) from a distance. The photos of this tour are VERY exaggerated. You get about 1/2 mile from Northwestern glacier, but because it’s retreating, it’s less impressive than you expect. No calfing glaciers and certainly no massive sheets of ice towering above you. I guess the photos were taken years ago or from some odd angle.
As for wildlife, we saw a couple of whales at a distance.... basically some spouting water. Nothing like a whale breaching or close to you. Apparently whales have LEFT RESURRECTION BAY because it’s too warm this year.... We saw a few seals at a distance. A few puffins on a rock far away. Some sea lions at maybe 1/2 mile away. We saw way, way more sea lions just laying on piers in the US, South America, etc. Even with a DSLR 300 mm lens, you can’t get a look at the face of any bird (except tons of gulls) or animal...you are too far away. Maybe that is enough for some, but IMO the photos on the website could not have been taken by any average person on this tour even with a good DSLR.
As to scenery, There are forest fires raging. So, 3/4 of the tour you can’t see much at all. The captain would say “over there is a mountain or a glacier, which we can’t see because of smoke.” You cannot get a photo of an Alaskan mountain at all... too much smoke. While not their fault, how can they charge us the same as others who can actually see mountains?
The captain did his very best and the crew were super, super nice. The food was pretty good and drinks very reasonably priced.
But, With limited whales and wildlife due to warm weather, and no scenery due to smoke, they should have cancelled this tour or refunded some of our money. Totally not worth $400 for a couple.
