Get off the cruise ship and onto the water! Alaska can be seen from many different viewpoints, but for up close experiences the jet boat excursion is hard to beat. After 5 days doing ho-hum excursions it was great to finally do one that was fun.
Initially I was a bit worried about the roughness - I've had several neck surgeries and the waiver clearly says no neck or back injuries. But my son was desperately bored on the ship and wouldn't go alone, so.... I'm an experienced boater so know that standing and absorbing the shock with my knees would make it tolerable. The boat they use is awesome - great hull design and dual props, along with saddle type seats which make the ride both thrilling and fast, yet comfortable and smooth. Our captain, CP, had perfect control of the boat, maneuvering in and out of small bays, spinning tight doughnuts, finding wakes to jump, etc. The naturalist on board was great, pointing out dozens of eagles, seals, and other wildlife.
Survival suits are worn, along with balaclavas, gloves, and goggles. Everything is top notch with this operation. My 16 year old liked it as much as the glacier helicopter excursion in Juneau and insisted I write a review.
