You will need your own car on this tour which you will be guided along with an audio program and marked destinations throughout the first commercial wind farm in Southern Calfornia. Once booked, we send you an email confirmation along with an App download and instructions. The tour starts with a display yard of non-operating wind turbines of successes and failures, along with a stop to a real generating wind turbine where you can get up close and take pictures. The tour ends with a stop at the Indigo Power Plant and retired wind farm. There you can exit on 19th Avenue to Indian Canyon Road and leave with more knowledge about renewable energy! The tour takes approximately one hour depending on your pace. We ask that you respect others by not gathering at the marked destinations. Please allow cars ahead of you to finish their exploration before your turn. One booking, includes two adults.

Before You Go

Congratulations on booking a Tour!

Please be advised, this ticket includes 2 adults per vehicle. We charge $10 for each additional adult at the tour center. Kids under 12 are free.

Please check in at the Tour Center and feel free to review our video and exhibits before heading out on your driving portion of the tour.

After that, our tour guide will send you on your way with a Map and instruct you on the Self-Driving Tour, which is accompanied by an APP download on your mobile device.

It's important to download the APP prior to arriving for ease of check-in and flow. If you have trouble downloading, we can troubleshoot at the tour center, but please make sure you know your Apple ID or Google Play ID in order to download the APP.

Earbuds or hooking up your mobile device to Bluetooth in your car so everyone can hear the tour is recommended and allows for optimal hearing and ease of use to start and stop at your discretion. If you have any questions, our tour guide will be able to assist you at the tour headquarters.

a very cool 2 hour tour of the Palm Springs windmills. It may be a bit advanced for very young ones, but the 8 and up crowd loved it and the adults found it quite interesting.Starts with a 20 minute talk, and than a bus tour with several stops around the property, and it is large.

This tour lasted about two hours--I have seen other reviewers indicate ninety minutes. You start at a little green trailer where the host made an oral presentation that gave a good overview of the operation and history of wind farms. Then you hop on a bus and visit a few of the gentle giants, several different kinds of windmills, different shapes and designs, and end up looking at what (when we visited anyway) is the cutting edge of electricity generating mills--two giants that stand at over 400 feet including the blades. It's a pretty unusual type of tour, but very relevant to the local economy and landscape of Palm Springs. Even if you don't have any interest in energy production, it's still fun to learn about the industry and to get up close and personal with a couple of windmills.

For years, we've been planning a visit to the Palm Springs windmill farms and this year we finally did it. We're sure glad we did as it was an information packed experience. We started at the Palm Springs Windmill Tours office and grounds with a history lesson regarding the evolution of the windmills, and we had a chance to see how windmills work and how the advances in windmill technology have led to greater energy efficiency. We then boarded the comfortable company bus and toured the different windmill farms in the area to see how the windmills have evolved over the years. We also got a good look at the large solar panel grids and the natural gas plants located amongst the windmills. We made stops when we had the opportunity to see the newest and largest windmills up close - very, very impressive indeed. The company staff was expert in answering questions, and after finishing the tour with a stop for a delicious date shake, we headed home with a ton of new-found knowledge about the effectiveness and significance of wind and solar power. Thank you Palm Springs Windmill Tours for a great afternoon in the desert!! If you have had a curiosity about those windmills and wondered about the impact that they are having on our environment, you won't be disappointed by taking this tour. It is well worth your while.
