We visit Country Tonite each year, and the cast treats all of its guests like family. This year, during intermission, host Kevin Wilson came into the audience to speak to several patrons by name, thanking them for attending. Even though many members of the cast were ill, they are to be admired for soldiering on to deliver a good show with content that included country, gospel, and patriotic music. This year's show relies heavily on the comedy of Chan Mullinax, playing Bubba the Redneck Ranger and Mee-Maw, and two new youth performers. The female youth performer has a rich voice that shined in the classic country in the first half of the show, but the young male performer appeared to be a better dancer than singer, as the lyrics were unintelligible at times and sounded more like screeching. As always, the highlight was the lush voice of the beautiful Melinda Hyder. It was touching to see the family tribute performed this year by Tryphena Layman as well. The gospel segment was short (only 2 selections), and we missed "The Lighthouse," performed in the past by the piano player, who is no longer with the show. The band is enjoyable, including Mike Caldwell, Larry Stewart, and Jack Mollette, but the current piano player's voice is not nearly as strong as the previous one's. As always, we appreciated the salute to veterans at the show's conclusion. It was also nice to hear that Charlie Bob Smith would be bringing his morning show to the theater beginning in October.
