I had a terrific experience taking a Private Surfing Lesson with Troy from Big Wave Dave Surf Company on New Years Day 2018. It was an early morning lesson for a great start to the year. Troy is an excellent instructor who has taught surfing sine a young age. He has a fun personality and made the entire experience a pleasure. With his guidance I was able to surf the entire time. This was my second experience surfing (the first in a group lesson on Waikiki also). The personalized lesson is really an advantage and made it easier and more enjoyable. Opt for a early morning lesson to avoid the Waikiki surfing crowds. Ask for Troy!

Our family decided to do this the morning before we departed from Hawaii. We made a reservation ahead of time for 0800. You meet at their shop on Koa Ave. where they give you an overview of surfing, in general, and then you walk over to the beach. They were thorough and stayed out in the water with my family the entire time. They did have a photographer come over as well and had pictures available for purchase. I was surprised that you had to buy all the pictures as a package (i.e., more expensive). I have a decent zoom lens on my camera so I had taken pictures, also, but I may have purchased one or two of theirs, but we did not need the entire set for the extra cost. The overall experience was wonderful - with their instruction, my teenagers were surfing within the first five minutes in the water.
