The Hill

The Hill is St. Louis' "Little Italy" neighborhood. Founded by Italian immigrants in the early 1800's, this neighborhood is the epicenter for Italian culture in the region. On our "Taste of The Hill" tour we will be visiting multiple "mom & pop" restaurants to sample St. Louis style pizza and our world famous Toasted Ravioli. Other stops include a 100 year old salumeria, an Italian bakery, a gelateria, and some other surprises. This tour can be a walking tour or use transportation provided. If walking, please note we will be taking plenty of breaks to rest and indulge in all The Hill has to offer.

The beating heart of The Hill is Saint Ambrose Catholic Church. We will be stopping for pictures and doing some exploring.

We were very disappointed in this Private Tour of the Hill. We expected it to be a food tour as it says in the description “ On our "Taste of The Hill" tour we will be visiting multiple "mom” and the rest of the sentence is cut off in the description but it reads like it’s a taste of the hill tour. We ate at 3 places (ravioli, pizza and gelato) and stopped at a bakery where we bought stuff to take home. None of the cost of the food was included. One would think a Taste of the Hill tour would include food. We were told by our guide that we would be so full by the end. Wayne presented himself as very knowledgeable about the Hill but we felt like we got minimal information about the area and lots of information about him. He was very personable and was a nice guy, but it wasn’t the tour we were hoping for. We also felt like the cost was very high for what we received in return. We did a food tour of the Hill a couple years ago with a different company and paid $79 and stopped at 6 food places, all food cost was included and we got a great history of the area. The lure of a private tour made me book this tour instead. I did like that it was just the four of us instead of a large group. Overall we didn’t feel this was a good value for our money and don’t recommend it.

Hello, We are very sorry that your tour expectations were not met during our outing. We pride ourselves on offering bespoke and fully curated experiences during our tours and are saddened to hear you believe we fell short this time. We wish something would have been said during the tour so we could adapt and better meet your unique wants. With regard to food, we stopped at a total of six establishments (your review neglected to mention the cafe, salumeria, & local market). In addition, as a welcome gift of hospitality, espresso shots were offered complimentary by our guide at the beginning of the tour and the group chose not to fully participate. Furthermore, the group opted out of going to Gioia's Deli which is a 100 year old staple on The Hill. We compiled with both of these wants in real-time. Lastly, when we visited Milo's Bocci Garden for drinks and snacks, the group chose to not look at food menus and order one drink for four people. As for additional costs, it is clearly stated in the listing that "all food and drink purchases are the responsibility of the guest". We apologize if that was not clear to your group pre-tour. Of course you realize if we covered the cost of food, soft drinks, and alcoholic drinks for four people at six or more venues, this tour would not be able to continue operating as it would not be sustainable. As for the guide, we are glad to hear he was personable and nice. We are unclear what you mean as you describe him as knowledgable about The Hill, but then say he only gave you minimal information. Again, we apologize that this tour did not meet your expectations. However, when the group decides not to take full advantage of the offerings, we feel that while unfortunate, we need to provide (or not provide) the wants communicated by our guests. Again, we regret that nothing was mentioned to your guide in real-time so we could extend the tour and possibly get closer to meeting your level of expectations.

My wife and I booked this trip to try something new in St. Louis. While we have been to the hill a few times, Wayne was great and really took us off the beaten path to some real gems. From homemade gelato, cannoli, and toasted ravioli, the food was amazing! You can tell they put their heart into what they do. Also, we heard some great stories about the history of the places and the hill in general. The other places we went were really fun as well. Volpi and Digregoorio’s (sp) were so much fun as well. So many tasty local treats and souvenirs to take home! Last, Wayne was a great tour guide. He has the history, the contacts, and gift of gab. He was fun to be around and you can tell he loves what he does. 10/10 would recommend!!!!
