We took 2 tours, the Walking Historical Tour (highly recommend by the way) in the morning, and this one in the afternoon. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in this tour. We had a small group, which was good but I kind of felt the tour was overpriced for what was given. We had 4 food stops. All were good, but the servings were kind of small, especially what I’d call the “main course” and the best....dessert! The vegetable was a succotash which was delicious & plentiful. It was followed by an appetizer of a very small soup & two small hush puppies (or green fried tomatoes if your don’t like seafood) all were good but small. That was followed by dessert (yes, BEFORE) the main course & was a small bite of praline, candy pecans & some fudge..all small..and a praline cookie to go. The main course followed with a mini BBQ sandwich and fried pamento. All very good but small..I’m not a big eater and in totality it was enough but I guess I was just disappointed in the sizes served and the fact they took you for “dessert” before dinner and it was minimal. We did this type of tour in Puerto Rico once before and it was outstanding! Plenty of food & fantastic dessert so I guess this just didn’t measure up. The guide was friendly & knowledgeable but I think she should have placed herself in the middle of the table instead of at the ends so we could all hear what she was saying. Overall, it was ok..I just expected better

Thanks ever so much for your thoughtful feedback. We have taken your suggestions to heart and are making some adjustments to improve the quality of the tour, i.e., larger portions and dessert AFTER the main course. We'd love to hear more details about your experience in Puerto Rico - we're not above borrowing concepts from other locales to improve our own. Please feel free to contact Randy Johnson, our Guide Manager, at [email protected], to discuss this further. You sound like a seasoned traveller and we highly value your opinion.

Overall, we liked the food, but our tour guide left something to be desired. We went to the following places... Another Broken Egg Cafe: sampled the BEST city grits (seriously, we went back to order more and I didn’t even know I liked grits!), great coffee, fried green tomatoes, and beignets. We were escorted upstairs and pretty much had the floor to ourselves which was nice. Oyster House: BEST she crab soup that we had for our entire stay there, shrimp wrapped in bacon and stuffed with crab meat, hush puppies, and a local rice dish. Everything here was great, and the restaurant itself is beautiful. Poogan’s Smokehouse: corn bread, fried cheese ball, and a pulled pork slider with coleslaw. Overall, this stop was disappointing. We got far less food here than anywhere else, and there was barely any pork in the slider (seriously, all we tasted was bread). There are much better smokehouses in the area, so hopefully this stop will be replaced. The Spice & Tea Exchange: we stopped in for a brief history lesson. The shop itself gives out a bunch of samples if you’d like to try anything. The Fudgery: we sampled quite a few things here... fudge, candy coated pralines, peanut brittle, chocolate turtle, and we left with a goody bag filled with candy pralines. As you can see, you sample a bunch of food and will definitely feel quite full by the end of it. Food-wise the trip is well worth the money. The group was comprised of ~10 people and everyone seemed friendly. The reason why we gave this tour 4 stars instead of 5 is because the tour guide was not very interactive, although he was nice. He did not speak whatsoever between stops and seemed to struggle a bit socially. Nevertheless, we would still recommend the tour as it was a great way to sample a bunch of low country food.

Many thanks for your praises, and we apologize for your guide's lack of interaction. Part of the experience is the one-on-one communication with your guide, who should always be engaging, entertaining and informative. We're working on an infusion of elan, joie de vivre and a heap of good old-fashioned egregious gregariousness. Right? It's all about the food - and we need to get all worked up about it. We heard you and we thank you for letting us know.

We did this food tour on a Monday afternoon in September w/Franny as our guide. She was very informative, sharing history about the city of Charleston and explained the history of the food culture here. She wove it all together nicely as it flowed to each of the places we visited. The samples were plentiful and yummy. We started at a nice restaurant near the market called Florence with southern succotash and fried oysters, then off to a spice store w/many food samples (although this stop felt a bit like a sales pitch, we enjoyed it and made a few purchases) next was a candy store where we sampled pecans, fudge, peanut brittle and bear claws and were given a praline to take home w/us! After that we went to a seafood restaurant (Oyster House) where we sampled she crab soup, hush puppies and bacon wrapped shrimp (Yum!) last stop was at a BBQ place called Poogan's Smokehouse where we had pork sliders, fried pimento cheese and potato salad. We were offered non-alcoholic beverages at each of the restaurants and could order and pay for alcohol if we were interested. We had a vegetarian in our group and they were able to accommodate her needs. The walking wasn't very far between places and we sat down and were served by a waiter at the restaurants. The tour took about 2.5 hours. Although the sequence seemed a bit out of order (you would think sweets would be last..) we enjoyed all of the stops and Franny did a great job keeping us interested in the wealth of information she provided. I felt the cost was appropriate for the time and amount of food we received. I would highly recommend, and will bring friends on another tour in the future. I have done a few of the Bull Dog ghost tours and have always been pleased. They do a great job making it fun and educational.

Thanks so much for your review! Franny does do a wonderful job on her tours, and we appreciate you recognizing her. As far as the locations we go to and the order depends on the day of the week and whether it is morning or afternoon. We work with our restaurant partners to be accommodating to our tours which often means determining a schedule that works well for them and us. Sometimes that means having the sweeter portion of the tour in the middle. As you also mentioned, we do our best to be accommodating to anyone who is vegetarian, vegan, and/or has food allergies. Thanks again for your review!
