Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
With towering dunes, endless beaches, wilderness islands and miles of trail to explore, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is definitely the main feature along the M-22 Scenic Drive.
2
Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
A mini-drive within the main drive, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive was once nominated for the Most Beautiful Place in America series. This slow but extremely beautiful 7-mile loop drive is not to be missed, taking in viewpoints, dunes, a covered bridge, changing forests - including a ghost forest - and even the Sleeping Bear itself
3
Point Betsie Lighthouse
The Point Betsie Lighthouse marks the southern entrance of the Manitou Passage, one of the Great Lakes' most treacherous stretches of water. It’s one of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan and guided tours are available of the 19th century keeper’s residence and 34-step tower.
4
Traverse City
Traverse City has long been known as the “Cherry Capital of the World”. In July and August, the countryside surrounding Traverse City is filled with fruit stands and markets brimming with baskets of sweet, dark cherries. My friend and I planned to drive the M22 for a fall colors tour. I decided to upload this guide. Figured it was $20...so worth the risk. We started in Manistee and ended in Traverse City. The guide, we called him Glen, follows you as you drive and gives you highlights of where to stop and gives the history of the area you're in. If you like hiking, there are suggestions along the tour as well. The whole trip took us a little over 9 hours with stops. It got a little confusing around Sleeping Bear. He gives details ahead of time, but we thought they were current stops. I would recommend this tour to help enjoy your M22 trip!

Hi Lisa, thank you for your thoughtful review. We're glad you found the guide helpful and enjoyable during your fall colors tour along M22. I'm so happy to hear you named the audio guide Glen. It’s rare for the audio to give details ahead of time, but it can occasionally happen if there’s a slight detour or change in the route. Since the tour is valid forever, feel free to give it another try and follow the path for an even smoother experience. We hope to join you on the road again soon!

Learning new things about our beautiful state was immensely enjoyable! I would never have known about Old Facefull or the story of how the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Manitoba islands got their names. We plan to do the trip again next summer!
